Pregnant?

Why is irritation more common during pregnancy?

Cystitis and urine infections are more common during pregnancy than at other times.1 One reason for this is the high levels of progesterone, the pregnancy hormone, which makes the bladder larger and more relaxed than usual so it does not empty as efficiently. Also, as the uterus grows it puts pressure on the bladder and urethra which can make it difficult to pass urine properly. When the bladder is not emptied, bacteria hangs around for too long and can multiply leading to infection.

Why is pH important?

The pH level also changes in pregnancy which may be an additional cause of irritation. The pH−balance of the intimate skin is different to the pH of body skin and is naturally more acidic to prevent and discourage infections. This low, acidic nature is caused by good bacteria ‘Lactobacilli’ that naturally inhabit the vagina, helping to keep it clean and healthy. But during pregnancy, the pH changes, leaving you prone to irritation and infection.

How femfresh can help

femfresh intimate hygiene products are pH−balanced for the intimate environment. They are hypoallergenic*, and dermatologically and gynaecologically tested so perfect for sensitive or irritated skin.

Janice’s top tips

All this irritation is the last thing you need when you’re pregnant, so what steps can you take to limit it happening?

  • Take in at least three litres of water each day to flush out your system and shift bacteria out of your bladder.
  • Because the pH of the intimate area is different to that of normal skin, use femfresh Intimate Wash or all over Body Wash, which are pH−balanced especially for women. This will ensure you are leaving good pH hanging around.
  • If you have cystitis, try drinking some cranberry juice which helps relieve the burning feeling. If you are in pain and don’t feel better in a few hours contact your doctor who may prescribe antibiotics.
  • Ask your pharmacist to suggest an over the counter remedy suitable for pregnant women. Again, if symptoms persist get to your doctors.
  • To soothe irritation try femfresh wipes and spray to cleanse and cool.
