Cystitis getting you down?

It has been estimated that an average case of cystitis results in 6.1 days of symptoms, 2.4 days of restriction on activities and 0.4 days in bed.

What is it?

Cystitis (a Urinary Tract Infection, ‘UTI’) is common affecting 50% of adult women at least once in their lives. In women aged 20-56 at least 20% will suffer an infection each year. Each year about 5% of women will visit their General Practitioner and require treatment.

Cystitis is an inflammation of the bladder due to bacterial infection, usually from the bowel or following sex. The infection can occur in any part of the path the urine takes as it exits the body.

Although UTIs occur in men and children they are far more common in women because of their anatomy. The urethra (the passage from which you urinate) is very short which makes it easy for outside bacteria to get into the bladder.

Common Causes

The most common causes of UTIs are sex and bad hygiene habits. If bacteria make its way to the bladder then an infection is sure to occur. People with diabetes are likely to suffer as the sugar in urine allows bacteria to flourish. Pregnant women and those with weak immune systems are also more at risk of infection.

Symptoms

The classic and very painful symptoms of cystitis include an urgent and often constant need to urinate and a burning sensation when you do so. Cloudy or blood tinged urine is a tell tale sign you have cystitis. Mild cases may be treated with over the counter remedies but if symptoms persist you should visit your GP and may require antibiotics.

Why is pH important?

Infection can be caused by a change in pH level. The pH−balance of the intimate skin is different to the pH of body skin and is naturally more acidic to prevent and discourage infections. This low, acidic nature is caused by the ‘good’ bacteria Lactobacilli that naturally inhabit the vagina, helping to keep it clean and healthy. But there are times when this delicate pH−balance changes, leaving you prone to irritation and infection.

How femfresh can help

femfresh intimate hygiene products are pH−balanced for the intimate environment so help to protect against irritation and infection. They are hypoallergenic*, and dermatologically and gynaecologically tested so perfect for sensitive or irritated skin.
